Scientific Achievement

  The kinetics of lignin removal includes two distinct phases, i.e. first fast phase followed second slow phase. A kinetic model was developed that details the relationship between the lignin removal and the laccase charge and treatment time. The established model can very well predict the lignin removal from the changes in the laccase charge and treatment time. Mass balance of laccase treatment showed dissolved material except lignin was negligibly affected by laccase treatment.

Significance and Impact

  Modeling of laccase induced lignin removal from pre-hydrolysis liquor (PHL) of kraft-based dissolving pulp production was demonstrated.

  Dissolved organic materials were negligibly affected from laccase treatment.
